Replacement Belts for Sony CD Changers
CD Changers have historically been the best way to listen to hours of uninterrupted music from your collection before the days of streaming radio and digitized files. Many people still prefer to have their own physical collection of CDs and be able to play them instead of being beholden to a streaming music company. Sony has produced some of the most popular CD changers that are capable of holding from five to four hundred discs. They have been acknowledged to be the most user-friendly and feature-rich products compared to ones from other manufacturers. They have been proven to be reliable over their 20-plus year history with the exception of one issue… the rubber belts!
Rubber belts – the size of small rubber bands – are used to couple a motor to a gear assembly for a variety of purposes. This design is preferred because they provide a quieter mechanism as opposed to a direct gear drive. While all rubber belts tend to stretch over time, Sony’s belts tend to completely deteriorate – often turning to a gooey mess like tar. This is the most frequent cause of failure for these machines.
We previously relied on other retailers of replacement belts as part of our repair and refurbishment process and found many of them to not fit correctly. After servicing hundreds of Sony CD Changers and dozens of different models, we have sourced the best belts – custom made to be an exact fit. We purchase them in sufficient quantities for our own use and to offer them for sale. These belts fall into several different categories of the most popular machines.
1 - Sony 5-Disc CD Changers made between 1993 and 1999

These machines have two belts. Belt #1 (Sony p/n 4-957-304-01 or 4-957-304-21 ) is a small belt is used to turn the carousel. When they get stretched out, the carousel often has a problem in rotating to the exact desired position. This causes the mechanism to sometimes jam when the disc is mounted to play. Or, it jams when the machine is empty and the loading mechanism attempts to park itself in the “No Disc” position. Other sellers provide a belt that is just slightly too tight, resulting in unacceptable slowdown as the carousel approaches the next disc. The Carousel Belt we sell is custom made for optimum performance. Belt #2 (Sony p/n 4-944-490-01) moves the drawer and CD pickup mechanism. It is unique because it is a very robust “timing belt” that has teeth to engage corresponding teeth on the pully. They really never stretch out but can become deformed if your machine has been sitting for many years without being used and take a “set” in one position. This can cause noisier operation when the loading table travels in and out or when the CD pickup is engaged. Sony designed these machines to use a 2mm wide belt. Problem is the smallest off-the-shelf belt is 3mm wide and some sellers offer this as a replacement. While the pully itself is 3mm wide, those do not always work smoothly due to tolerance issues between the belt and pulleys. And that’s why Sony used 2mm belts on a 3mm pully! 2 - Sony 5-Disc CD Changers made between 2000 and 2016
Fits CDP-CE245, CDP-CE275, CDP-CE345, CDP-CE375, CDP-CE500, CDP-CE545, CDP-CE575
The two belts for these model were woefully undersized and fail even more catastrophically compared to the previous generation above. They usually fail concurrently, often deteriorating into a gooey mess. One failure is the that carousel simply won’t turn or turns very sluggishly. The other failure is the drawer won’t open, often causing a screeching sound and the dreaded “ERROR” on the display. These are Sony p/n 4-225-328-01 Rotary Belt (turns the carousel) and 4-225-885-01 Loading Belt (moves the drawer and CD pickup mechanism). Most vendors sell replacement carousel belts that are slightly too small, resulting in significant slow-down when the machine attempts to find the next disc. We tried quite a few different vendors of replacement belt kits and every one had this issue. 3 - Sony 300-Disc MegaStorage CD Changers
Fits CDP-CX300, CDP-CX333ES, CDP-CX335, CDP-CX350, CDP-CX355, CDP-CX555ES, CDP-CX691
These models use three belts. Sony p/n 4-216-061-01 Carousel Belt (turns the carousel) and Loading Belt (moves the CD pickup mechanism) usually fail concurrently, often deteriorating into a gooey mess. The Carousel Belt failure caused the 300-disc carousel (table) to stop turning, causing the dreaded “Table Error” message. The loading belt failure prevents the CD pickup mechanism from engaging. The third belt, Sony p/n 4-219-326-01 moves the loading door. While we have not found this belt to fail completely, they do get stretched out and we find them to be on their way to outright failure… time will tell if they will last another five years or so. 4 - Sony 400-Disc MegaStorage CD Changers
Fits CDP-CX400, CDP-CX450, CDP-CX455, CDP-M333ES, CDP-M400CS, CDP-M555ES, CDP-CX777ES, CDP-CX985V, CDP-CX995V
These models have the identical issues as the 300-Disc models described above. These consist of Sony p/n 4-225-876-01 Carousel Belt (turns the carousel) and Loading Belt (moves the CD pickup mechanism), and 4-219-326-01 Loading Door Belt (moves the loading door). Please be aware that the Carousel and Loading belts for 400-Disc machines are different from the ones for the 300-Disc machines. Some vendors sell the same Carousel and Loading Belts for both the 400 and 300 but this is not correct. The belts we sell are the correct size for the 400-Disc models. 5 - Sony 200-Disc CD Changers
All of these models use a very robust “timing belt” that has teeth to engage corresponding teeth on the pully. They really never stretch out but can become deformed if your machine has been sitting for many years without being used and take a “set” in one position. This can cause noisier operation. There are several different variants of 200-Disc machines. The first grouping have a manually operated drop-down door. The other variant has a motorized door. That door belt never seems to fail so we don’t offer it.
